“ 　すぎやま先生が『ドラゴンクエスト』を作曲された時代、他の有名な作曲家たちのなかにも、ゲーム音楽作曲の打診を受けた人はたくさんいたそうです。
　でも、彼らの多くは、「ファミコンの３音くらいの貧弱な音源では、私の曲は表現しきれない」ということで、依頼を断ったのだとか。

　ところが、すぎやま先生は、そんなハンデなど問題にしていなかったようです。

　2006年に他の雑誌の記事で『ファイナルファンタジー』シリーズの植松さんの「３音だけってのは、やりにくいですよね」という問いに、「音楽なんて２音で充分。ドラクエは２音で作ってるよ。残りの１音は効果音に使ってる」と答えておられたのがすごく印象的でした。
